The citizens not letting Belgrade d(r)own

On Saturday, October 22nd 2016, 17:00 at Holzmarkt, Berlin, Natalija Simović, member of the Initiative “Ne da(vi)mo Beograd” (Don’t let Belgrade d(r)own), will present the two and a half years of citizens’ struggle against a shady investment deal “Belgrade Waterfront” and their fierce fight against privatisation of Belgrade’s riverside by a dodgy enterprise.

The Initiative “Ne da(vi)mo Beograd” gained massive public attention after a wave of state organized demolitions in Serbia’s capital for a private real estate development. Shortly after midnight, during early morning hours of April 25th 2016, a bizarre incident took place. Masked men wearing balaclavas and driving vehicles without number plates confiscated mobile phones, tied up onlookers and held them captive as buildings were illegally knocked down to make room for the shady investment deal named “Belgrade Waterfront.”

“Ne da(vi)mo Beograd” has been organizing protests against the “Belgrade Waterfront” development since Serbia’s Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic announced the project in 2014. But following the demolitions in April, number of citizens attending the protests and demanding answers have skyrocketed, making them among the largest anti-government protests Serbia has seen since the fall of Slobodan Milosevic. As the initiative gained momentum, Serbian government and Belgrade’s top officials responded with smear campaigns in state controlled media, intimidation and numerous accusations against this small, but determined group gathered around “Ne da(vi)mo Beograd.”
